Training Programs

A Fresh Perspective Dog Training offers several programs to help you develop the relationship you desire with your dog:

In-Home Training

Our primary service is private in-home training to address behavioral issues. This can be anything from dealing with a hyper-active puppy to rehabilitating severe fear and

aggressive behavior. Most behaviors are at their worst when your dog is in their home environment, so in-home training is the appropriate venue for addressing behavior.
We provide a program that is tailored to each family's needs that includes a complete explanation of the issues that motivate a dog's behavior, our philosophy for how to approach the rehabilitation process, and coaching through the skills necessary to solve the problem. An initial session lasts 4-6 hours and will include a complete solution for the dog's issues. We recommend a follow-up session 2-3 weeks after that to help you firm up your skills and deal with any new issues that may have arisen. The follow-up session lasts 2-3 hours. We typically expect that most issues can be well in hand within 4-6 weeks after a structured program is implemented in the home.

Initial Session:         $199
Follow-up sessions:  $155

Puppy Socialization Program

Young puppies have special training and socialization needs to set healthy patterns for their lives. In particular, the experiences they have between 12 and 24 weeks old set the tone for their reactions to new experiences from that point forward. Ensuring that they receive positive, controlled experiences during this critical developmental stage is the key to having a dog that is social with strangers, children, and other animals. Our Puppy Socialization program is designed to provide families with the guidance they need to help ensure good behavior and socialization for their youngest family members. The program includes 8 one-hour private sessions (once per week) in various public locations chosen to address various aspects of socialization, and is followed by 6 hours (four 1 ½ hour classes) of group training for basic obedience. Puppies may begin the program as early as 12 weeks old, but no later that 18 weeks old. Puppies older than this should enroll in the “Good Citizen” program instead.

Canine Care and Obedience Classes

Our 5-week Canine Care and Obedience Classes are designed to provide general information for how to humanely train and care for your dog, with an emphasis on newly adopted animals. We discuss nutrition, grooming, preparing to go to the Vet, handling by children, and the "Big Five" obedience commands: Heel, Sit, Stay, Down, and Come. This class includes a two-hour seminar about Canine Communication and preventing Behavioral Issues. obedience classesWe offer this course at no charge to any animal adopted from a no-kill shelter or rescue in the Albuquerque metro area if the family enrolls within the first 30 days after adoption. It takes a dog 30-45 days after they enter a new home to decide what they think the rules are, and if training can be implemented within that time many issues can be prevented from ever occuring. Dogs must be at least 16 weeks old to attend classes.

If enrolled within 30 days of adoption: NO CHARGE
All Others:   $99

Walk Your Dog Clinics

The first step to keeping your dog happy and correcting behavioral issues is to get them enough exercise. For many people, however, time or money prevent them from being able to commit to attending a full obedience course. Our Walk Your Dog Clinics are an ideal solution for these situations. We offer a one hour class that deals just with leash technique and teaches families how to be able to walk their dog so they can enjoy their dogs more. No matter how badly a dog may pull, lunge, forge ahead, resist or act out, every dog can be taught to be calm and agreeable on a leash.

One Class. One Hour. Problem Solved. $39

Service Animal Training for the Disabled

A Fresh Perspective Dog Training provides a unique training program designed to help those with any diagnosed disability* (physical or mental) obtain and train a Service Animal for assistance. The program is designed to teach persons with disabilities to train their own Service Animal with supervision. It includes intensive training for socialization, obedience, control in challenging situations, and whatever specialty skills are necessary for the dog to perform a useful function for the individual. Training is held in many different environments including restaurants, public events, libraries, malls, and wherever the individual goes on a regular basis. This includes basic mobility (the person may be ambulatory or have wheel-chair assistance) and must be sighted*. Each program will be tailored to fit the specific needs of the disabled person.

Training may be implemented for a dog that is currently in the home, or assistance will be provided to help the individual find the correct animal for their needs. The policy of a A Fresh Perspective Dog Training is to work with the no-kill shelters and rescues in the Albuquerque area to locate and place appropriate animals.

The Service Animal program requires a monthly subscription with a 6 month minimum length. The exact length of the program will vary based on the needs of the individual and the consistency with which training is applied. The average length of a service program is between 12 and 18 months.
